Fantasy

Fantasy is often considered to be distinct from both the Science Fiction Film and Horror Film. The genre is famous for its element of escapism through the forms of myth, magic and the supernatural.

Fantasy film has a very broad and wide definition and boundary, it can vary from films from Star Wars to Toy Story to surrealist martial art film such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Fantasy films are almost as old as cinema itself, the earliest fantasy film was made by film pioneer Georges Méliès in 1902 in A Trip to the Moon. The genre continued to flourish and develop throughout the beginning of the century and the 1920’s in films such as The Thief of Bagdad and Phantom.
It was in the 1930’s when sound was introduced into film when the most famous works of the genre came about, for example The Wizard of Oz 1939 and King Kong 1933.

Drama

1950‘s: In the early years of cinema however, drama held sway as the transition from silent cinema’s pantomime transcending into a more artistic presentation.
An iconic film in this early development of drama is the film A Streetcar Named Desire 1951.

1970’s: during this period iconic directed who focused on melodrama, such as Martin Scorsese and Ford Coppola made their first recognised iconic films, Taxi Driver 1976 and The Godfather 1972. It was also during this period that drama were particularly focused on war, specifically The Second World War and the Vietnam War, films such as a Apocalypse Now 1979.

1980’s: During the 80’s drama films had a emphasis on emotional films such as Stephen Spielburg’s film The Color Purple 1985. However the genre also began to blend with science fiction with films such as E.T  the Extra-Terrestrial 1982 and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner 1982. It is around this period that the Drama/ Fantasy genre had its origins.

2000’s to present day: During the 00’s the biopics were particularly popular amoung drama film makers, for example 8 Mile 2002 and Milk 2008. Despite there being a drop in the popularity with romantic dramas such as films like American Beauty 1999, there was a popular need for epic and ground-breaking dramas such as Slumdog Millionaire 2008.
