Vladimir Propp's Character Theory

Vladimir Propp came up with his theory after studying hundred's of fairytales and he discovered that all characters fall under these 7 catergories:
  • Hero
  • False Hero
  • Dispatcher
  • Villain
  • Princess
  • Donor
  • Magic Helper
Within his theory all 7 characters have a specific role.

The Hero – Seeks something

The Villian – Opposes or actively blocks the hero’s quest

The Donor – Provides an object with magical properties

The Dispatcher – Sends the hero on a quest via a message

The False Hero – Makes false claims, disrupting the hero’s success

The Magic Helper – Aids the hero

The Princess – Acts as the ‘reward’ for the hero and the object of the villain’s plot

Her Father – Rewards the hero for his efforts
